How Do I Choose A Camping Cot?

Choosing a tent cot depends on each individual's specific needs and preferences. However, here are some factors to consider when choosing a camping cot:

Size: Make sure to choose a tent cot that is comfortable for you. You don't want to be cramped up in a small space!

Weight: Consider how easy the tent cot is to carry. If you're planning on hiking with your gear, you'll need something lightweight.

Price: Tent cots can range in price, so decide how much you're willing to spend.

Features: Some tent cots come with special features like mosquito nets or storage compartments. Decide if any of these are must-haves for you.

Setup: Tent cots are notoriously difficult to open but more often than not it's about not understanding the setup quirks of your particular choice. Take time to read the instruction manual and practice setting it up before your camping trip.

With all of these factors in mind, take a look at our top picks for the best camping cots and find the perfect one for your next adventure!

Are Camping Cots Comfortable To Sleep On?

If you have ever slept on a lounge chair, you might be thinking that you don't think a tent cot is worth it. However, tent cots can be a great option for comfortable camping, especially if you plan on spending a lot of time in your tent.

They can be comfortable to sleep on, however, it really depends on the quality of the cot and how you plan to use it. For example, if you are planning on using your tent cot for extended backpacking or camping trips, then you'll want to make sure that you get a high-quality cot that is comfortable and sturdy.

On the other hand, if you're just using your tent cot for occasional car camping trips, then you might be able to get away with a cheaper model.

They provide support for your back and minimize the amount of contact you have with the ground, which can help to keep you warm.

In addition, nowadays, camping cots are often large enough to accommodate two people, so you can snuggle up with a friend or loved one.

However, it's important to choose a tent cot that is durable and easy to set up, as some models can be quite heavy and difficult to assemble. Be sure to read the instruction manual before leaving for your trip so you know you are comfortable with setup.

With a little preparation, you can goodbye to visions of sleeping on a lounge chair and find the perfect tent cot for your next outdoor adventure.

What Size Tent Will Fit A Cot?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the size of a cot tent that will fit a tent cot depends on the make and model of both the tent and the cot in question. Some tent cots are wider than others, and some tents are narrower than others. Some are tall and some are very low to the ground. That said, here are a few general tips on choosing a tent cot:

1) Make sure to choose a tent that is large enough to accommodate both the cot and the camping gear you will be bringing with you.

2) If you are backpacking and looking for a lightweight option, be careful to find a tent cot that is adjustable for height.

When you are backpacking you need to consider choosing a cot tent that does not have too much extra room or too many extra features. The emphasis will be on functionality. Anything extra will make the pack heavier.

So it's super important to know the footprint and height and shape of your cot tent so you can see if the tent cot you have your eye on will fit. Extra features like rain flys and vestibules can add weight to your tent, so would only choose them if you know you will need them for a dog to sleep in, for instance.

Are Cots Good For Cold Weather Camping?

Yes, cots are fine for cold weather camping if you take a few things into account. Because they are raised off the floor, they do provide insulation by keeping you off the ground, and by being raised above the groundsheet, you will never end up wet if there is water ingress into the tent that accumulates on the floor of the tent.

However, if you are winter camping, you need to consider that cold air will circulate underneath the tent cot. This makes them well suited for camping in warm climates. Which is brilliant really as it makes them quite versatile

So, you will need to consider an insulator of some kind if you are winter camping. A reflective tarp or perhaps a sleeping pad with insulation built in would be wise.

Another plus: tent cots can be quick to set up and take down (if you have mastered the technique - so practice before your trip please). Speed of setup is important when you're camping in colder temperatures.

Are Backpacking Cots Worth It?

Well, there is a lot to weigh up here as every single thing you include in your backpack must earn its place on your back. You will need to carry the weight after all!

Side sleepers may be tempted to bring along a lightweight tent cot like some reviewed in this article. They're a good choice for side sleepers or hikers with knee problems because they conform to the body and prevent pressure points. This is key for preventing any type of joint pain or discomfort while you're camping.

On the other hand, there are some very impressive air pads out there that are also a great option. I have included a selection below.

Something else to consider is that when you are backpacking out in the wild, you might be tempted to spend a night out of your tent and under the stars. A tent cot is ideal for this. It will be like sleeping on your bed in an observatory. What a treat!

Are Tent Camp Cots Difficult To Put Up?

Tent cots can be tricky to set up. What we are seeing though is that designers are taking this into account and we are seeing more tent cots on the market where there is specific attention placed on ease of setup.

What is often the case is that the tent cot is harder to set up the first few times and then it becomes significantly easier. This may be due to you learning the knack.

It could be that after being used a bit the seams are not as tough to manipulate as when its fresh out of the box.

Either way we recommend reading the manufacturers instructions carefully and doing a dry run when you are still at home to avoid any frustrations out on the camping trip.

Are Cots Good For Side Sleepers?

As a side sleeper myself I know how uncomfortable you can get if your sleeping mat is inadequate - your hipbones and shoulder bones tend to dig into the hard ground. So the trick is to find a super-duper air mattress or sleeping pad OR a well-designed camp cot.

But in general, tent cots can be good for side sleepers if they are properly sized and firm enough that they don't sag into any obstacles below.

If you're a side sleeper who tends to toss and turn at night, a tent cot can be a good option because it will keep you more stable than a sleeping bag on the ground.

And if you opt for a tent cot with a slight slope, it can help relieve some pressure on your hips and shoulders.

How Can I Make My Cot More Comfortable?

There are a few things you can do to make your tent cot more comfortable. First, make sure that the cot is the right size for you. If it's too small, you'll be uncomfortable and cramped.

Second, add a mattress pad or sleeping bag topper for extra cushioning.

Third, bring along a couple of pillows for added comfort. There are some cool camping pillow alternatives to your pillow at home. I wrote about them in my article on the best backpacking pillows. They are very useful as they are very light and take up very little space in your pack.

Finally, try to camp in a spot that's relatively level and free of rocks and roots which would provide an unstable surface. That way, you won't have to worry about rolling out of your cot in the middle of the night!

Does A Camp Cot Need A Mattress?

There are differing opinions on this. Some campers will scoff at the idea of packing an extra mattress when you already have a comfortable bed to sleep on. Most camp cots are made for use without a mattress.

On the other hand, if you do have the extra packing space and you are not having to carry your gear in a pack or for any distance, and weight is not a consideration, there are some brilliant options available to you.

Two options you might consider: a foam mattress or a camping pad. I have added a few foam mattress options in my article on car camping sleeping pads or scroll down for more sleeping pad options below.

If you have loads of extra space you could even opt for a heavy-duty mattress instead of a camp bed. They would not be a sensible choice if you were backpacking as they weigh quite a bit, but if you are interested in having a look, you can pop over to read our article on standalone camping air mattresses.

Best Tent Cot Mattress Options

What we did notice though, was that many campers like to bring along a camping mattress or camping pad to provide even more of a luxurious camping experience.

So what I have done for you here is to include some of our favourite sleeping pads that we think would work well. Please bear in mind the measurements of your tent cot of choice and compare them to the measurements of any sleeping pad you may have in mind.

I have also included a memory foam mattress topper more suitable for use And remember, the first camp cot we reviewed above (the Coleman Camping Cot, Air Mattress, and Pump Combo) comes complete with an sleeping pad already.

So it gives you the option of using them as standalone or coupled with the camping cot for a raised off the ground experience.
