HOW TO HAMMOCK CAMP – Don’t Suspend Your Camping Comfort!

By ANNIE RITCHIE / November 21, 2022

Camping is a great way to get in touch with nature, but it’s not always comfortable. Without the right gear, sleeping on the ground can be cold and uncomfortable, and without taking the right measures, mosquito bites are practically guaranteed. That’s why more and more campers are opting to hammock camp. Hammocks are incredibly comfortable, and they’re also very easy to set up. Just follow these tips and you’ll be relaxing in your hammock in no time.

How to Set Up a Camping Hammock

First, find two trees that are the right distance apart. The easiest way to do this is to lie down in your hammock and measure the distance between your two anchor points. You’ll need about 10-15 feet of space between the two trees.

Once you’ve found the perfect spot, it’s time to tie the knots. There are a few different ways to do this, but the most popular method is to use a basic slip knot. The most important thing is to make sure that the knots connecting the hammock and suspension lines are secure and tight.  Otherwise, you’ll end up on the ground in a heap!

Hammocks typically come with two hammock straps, which you’ll use to attach the hammock to the trees. First, wrap one strap around one tree and then thread the other strap through the loop.  Repeat this process with the other tree.

Some hammocks come with carabiners. All you have to do is attach the carabiners to the anchor points and then clip them onto the loops at the ends of the hammock.

If you’ve got a double hammock, then you may need to add an additional suspension line in the middle. Just tie another knot between the two anchor points and attach it to your hammock with carabiners or rope clamps.

You may choose to add a tarp, a hammock under-quilt or a hammock bug net at this point. Although optional, these can make quite a difference depending on campsite and weather conditions,

Once everything is secure, you can climb into your hammock and enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep under the stars!.

How to Hammock Camp without Trees

Consider using a camping hammock stand if you don’t have trees nearby to anchor your hammock. Set up your hammock stand following manufacturer’s guidelines. Place your hammock in the stand and make sure it is hanging level using the hammock straps and carabiners, just as you would if you were suspending the hammock between trees. A hammock stand is more appropriate for if you have space to store the stand. You would not be able to go backpacking with this equipment.

How to Hammock Camp in Cold Weather

For those who enjoy camping in hammocks, the onset of cold weather can be a bit of a downer. But don’t despair! With a little preparation, you can still enjoy all the benefits of hammock camping, even when the temperature starts to drop. The key is to insulate yourself from the cold ground.

Insulating layer

First, make sure you have a good insulating layer beneath you. A sleeping pad could help to keep you warm. You can also use a sleeping bag designed for cold weather camping. But an even better option is to bring along a hammock under-quilt for insulation. Hammock under-quilts hang under the hammock cocooning them. This prevents cold penetrating from below. Once you’re all cozy and warm, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the great outdoors, even in the middle of winter!

Tarp

Second, consider using a tarp over your hammock to provide extra protection from the elements. A tarp will also help to block out the wind, which can make a big difference in how comfortable you are.

Clothing

Dress in layers. Wearing multiple layers of clothing will help to trap heat and keep you warm. Be sure to include a hat and gloves in your wardrobe, as they can help to prevent heat loss.

By following these tips, you can stay warm and comfortable while hammock camping in cold weather. So don’t let the chilly temperatures keep you from enjoying your time in the great outdoors.

How to Set Up a Hammock Tarp

Hammock camping is a great way to enjoy the outdoors without roughing it too much. But even the most experienced camper can get caught in a storm. That’s why it’s important to know how to erect a hammock tarp.

The first step is to find two sturdy trees that are spaced about 10-12 feet apart. Then, tie one end of the tarp to each tree using a strong knot. Next, pull the tarp tight and secure it in the middle using either a metal ring or a carabiner. Finally, use some guy lines to secure the corners of the tarp to the ground. This will help to keep the tarp from blowing away in strong winds. The most important thing to remember is that the tarp should be slightly higher at the head end than the foot end. This will help to keep you dry in case of rain. With a little practice, you’ll be able to set up your hammock tarp in no time at all.

How to Hammock Camp with a Dog

If you’re planning a hammock camping trip and wondering if you can bring along your furry friend, the answer is yes… with a few caveats. First, make sure your dog is comfortable with being off the ground. Some dogs are fearful of heights and may not enjoy spending time in a hammock. Second, be prepared to share your hammock – there’s not a lot of room in the cocoon shape for stretching out. Make sure your dog is comfortable with being in a confined space – you don’t want them trying to make a break for it in the middle of the night!  And finally, remember that not all campsites are created equal when it comes to accommodating our four-legged friends. Be sure to do your research before setting up camp. Hammock camping with your dog can be a fun and unique way to bond with your furry friend. With some planning you will be  sure to have a paw-sitively memorable time camping in the great outdoors!

Hammocks are a great way to add some luxury to your camping trips. With just a few simple steps, you can have the perfect hammock camping spot set up in no time. Now all that’s left to do is enjoy the view!
